South Trails

The south trails meander through sparse forests, allowing for plenty of views of the surrounding mountains. Most of the southern trails are flat and do not provide the variation in terrain that is found on the northern routes.

Junction 37-38 One of the more interesting of the southern trails, with a nice viewpoint overlooking the Kootenay River near Junction 38.

A little history

Nipika has a long history. Originally the region was inhabited by the Ktunaxa people, who roamed the area for thousands of years. For five years, until 1925, the land was occupied by the trapper Bill Yearling, whose cabin still stands today. Since then the land has been used by homesteaders and horse outfitters. In 1979 Lyle Wilson discovered it and began developing what we know today as “Nipika.” Before starting Nipika, Lyle founded Fresh Air Experience, a ski shop that in its heyday grew to 13 stores across the country. This organization was responsible for teaching an astonishing 70,000 individuals in learn to ski programs. Lyle later went on to coach Nordic skiing for 16 years, during which he attended eight World Championships and two Olympics. He definitely knows a thing or two about skiing, which is more than evident in what he, his wife Dianne, son Steve and daughter Marni, have created at Nipika.
